The Carnegie Center offers a variety of exhibits and activities for visitors, including those geared towards children. The quilt exhibit was a hit with my family, and there were informative displays on the Underground Railroad. For kids, there were interactive areas where my 3-year-old could make his own quilt with magnets and project it onto the wall. The museum also had a small play area with Magna Tiles. Additionally, there were mentions of educational displays on the history of slavery and the Underground Railroad in southern Indiana and New Albany, including an hour-long movie about slavery.
While some temporary exhibits were under construction during one visit, the permanent exhibitions, such as the award-winning Underground Railroad exhibit, were available. The staff was described as super friendly and knowledgeable, contributing to a welcoming and enjoyable experience. The museum is often praised for its focus on local history, including the Monon Railroad lines, and for offering free admission.
In summary, the Carnegie Center is recommended for families, with both informative exhibits and interactive activities for children. Despite occasional closures for new exhibits, the museum provides a valuable and educational experience, showcasing the area’s history and art.
