I visited the Filson Historical Society’s downtown location over 15 years ago and had a wonderful experience exploring the exhibits related to Lewis and Clark. While I don’t recall this specific downtown location, I vividly remember the exhibit showcasing Lewis and Clark, which was not far from the Slugger Museum.
What stood out to me was the personalized and unique historical focus offered by historical societies like Filson. Unlike more popular attractions, there was a sense of tranquility that allowed me to delve deeper into the history without feeling rushed or distracted by large crowds, especially school groups.
The exhibit provided a fascinating insight into Louisville’s past, and the Filson Historical Society in general is a little-known gem for those interested in Kentucky history. The staff was helpful and accommodating, and I appreciated the opportunity to learn more about the region’s history, including the Lewis and Clark expedition.
The Filson’s historic Ferguson Mansion was a highlight, showcasing Kentucky-related historical materials, and the newer addition added to the overall experience. I also learned about their research library, which even nonmembers can access for a fee.
Overall, the Filson Historical Society left a lasting impression on me, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in history, whether they’re a local history buff or just curious about Louisville’s rich past. It’s a unique resource that offers a different perspective on the region’s history, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have explored it.
