The Cairo Tower stands tall at 187 meters (614 feet) and is located on Gezira Island (Zemalak) just north of the Museum of Modern Art in Cairo, Egypt. The tower is in the form of a latticework tube that slightly fans out at the top, resembling a lotus plant. It is the fourth-highest tower in the world.
Constructed in 1961 under the direction of Naum Chebib, the Cairo Tower is made of granite, the same material often used by ancient Egyptians. The tower is about 45 meters taller than the Great Pyramid at Giza. It has a rotating restaurant that was a favorite dining spot for the late President Gamal Abdul Nasser and his family. The restaurant still rotates at an almost unnoticeable speed today.
The best time to visit the Cairo Tower, also known as Borj al-Qahira, is at sunset when millions of lights come to life, offering a panoramic view of Cairo. On a clear day, you can see the easternmost extent of Cairo, the Muqattam Hills, the pyramids to the west, and the Nile River flowing north to the Mediterranean. There are telescopes available to facilitate the view.
The Cairo Tower is open every day from 9:00 in the morning until 1:00 the next morning. It is considered one of Cairo’s most famous landmarks and provides a highlight of the modern city. Note that there is an entrance fee to visit the tower, and tickets for photography and video cameras are available at an additional cost.
