Participating in the free tour at the Filson Historical Society was a delightful and insightful experience. I attended the tour on a Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m., and it provided a unique glimpse into Louisville’s rich history. The tour, lasting about an hour, was conducted by Heather, who offered a personalized and engaging experience.
The tour covered several areas of the Filson’s facility, starting with the historic Ferguson Mansion. Heather showcased original and period pieces within the mansion, highlighting the intricate wood craftsmanship that adorned the interior. Additionally, she guided me through the Society’s research library, where even nonmembers like myself could explore historical materials, although there was a $10 fee for nonmembers. The tour also included a visit to two galleries displaying rotating exhibits; during my visit, one gallery featured a compelling collection of World War I photographs taken by a U.S. soldier in Europe.
What stood out was the Filson’s commitment to providing a comprehensive understanding of Kentucky’s history. Heather patiently answered my numerous questions, adding a personal touch to the experience. The ambiance of the refurbished mansion, coupled with the fascinating exhibits and friendly staff, made the Filson a hidden gem in Louisville.
For those interested in history, the Filson offers an excellent opportunity with its free tours every day at 2 p.m., Monday through Friday. The staff, including Heather, was not only knowledgeable but also passionate about sharing the rich history of the Ohio Valley and beyond. Overall, the Filson Historical Society is a must-visit for history enthusiasts, offering a blend of historical charm and educational resources.
